Our Community Hapori

We are a large family, whānau. Our school works in partnership with our whānau to provide a holistic learning environment where we know children’s wellbeing must come first before they can learn. There is a very clear focus of pastoral care at Somerfield School Te Kura Wairepo focused on the needs of the Whānau and raising student achievement.

Community Report
Charter and Strategic Plan 2020

Kahukura - A community of practice.

Kahukura is a Community of Practice consisting of seven schools – Addington School Te Kura Taumatua, West Spreydon, Sacred Heart, Christchurch South Intermediate, Somerfield Te Kura Wairepo, Thorrington and Cashmere Primary Te Pae Kererū. Our vision is – supporting responsive, collaborative learning connecting students, teachers and communities across the cluster. We work together on a strategic plan that includes – Cultural Responsiveness, Deep Learning, Inclusive Education and Leadership. Somerfield Te Kura Wairepo and the other schools of the COP joined together for several activities in 2017 including new initiatives. The Kahukura Music Festival was highly successful with all schools performing at the Aurora Centre. In 2017 we also held our first Kahukura Festival with a picnic and kapahaka performance. These two events are becoming highlights in our calendar. The major deep learning unit on “ Changemakers” was a learning highlight for all children across the cluster.

Board of Trustees

The Board of Trustees works in partnership with the community, principal, teachers and government to ensure that our students get the best possible education. Together the BOT “governs” the school – that is, set the goals, vision and priorities for the school in the form of our school charter. We must ensure that the National Education Goals are met – they are the government’s priorities for education; and that the National Administration Guidelines are followed.

The Board meets twice a term (advertised in the school newsletter). Our meetings are open to the public and you are welcome to attend. If you wish to raise an issue at a BoT meeting you should first discuss this with a member (usually the Principal or Chairperson) so it can be added to the agenda before the meeting. Everyone is welcome – even if you just want to see what we do and how we do it.

Parent Teacher Association

Our school is supported by an active PTA who fundraise to support the purchase of resources as well as playing a welcoming role within our school for new parents. The committee is made up of Somerfield whanau, BOT representaives and staff representatives.  Anyone is welcome to attend committee meetings held in the staff room throughout the year.

The committee has several successful fundraisers during the year, including Quiz Night, a Christmas Night Market, Hell Pizza Day, discos, saussage sizzles and much more.

We are always looking for people with fresh ideas or who’d like to lend a hand in any small way. We need helpers as well as organizers so if being on the committee is not your thing you could be a friend of the PTA and pitch in when you can.
