Matariki - the Maori New Year

Matariki, the Māori new year is coming up these holidays! Many of your children have been learning about this important time of year and about the 9 stars at school this term, especially if they're involved in kapa haka. Ask them all about it!This year Matariki is on the 13th of July. It's a time for getting together, sharing kai, and slowing gratitude for the year that's past, while looking forward to the next year. You may like to watch this video explaining about the 9 stars and their importance.

This year for Matariki why not plan something special? Head to your local library where they have some special displays up, or head online here: where there are heaps of activities you could do over the holidays to learn more about this special time of year.

Happy Matariki!
