Cultural Ahurea

Our children get opportunities to participate in a wide variety of activities outside the classroom including music, choir and kapahaka.

Kapahaka

Kapahaka is taught as an optional extension programme from Year 2 – Year 6. There are currently 3 groups:
– Senior Kapahaka – Experienced seniors Y4-6.
– Junior Kapahaka – Experienced juniors Y2-3.
– Beginners Kapahaka – This is a mix of seniors or juniors who haven’t done kapa in previous years

Music

The Kahukura cluster schools have a Junior Orchestra. Students in Years 5-8 from across the cluster schools are invited to join the orchestra which will begin in term 2, 2020.
Students must be receiving music lessons in their chosen instrument and have had at least five lessons before the orchestra begins.
The orchestra focus will be for students to experience and learn how to be part of an orchestra with the goal to learn and perform pieces later in the year. Junior Orchestra rehearsals will be held at Christchurch South Intermediate on Mondays after school.
Contact Kim Radcliffe Price for further information.

Choir

Somerfield Te Kura Wairepo provides opportunities for children from year 2 to 6 to become a member of one of the school choirs.  Each choir participates in one of the following out-of-school performances during the year: Kids in Town, Kahukura Schools Music Festival and the Christchurch Schools Music Festival.

We have three choirs within our school:
Waka Mōkihi Choir (Year 2)
Waka Kōpapa Choir (Year 3/4)
Waka Tētē Choir (Year 5/6)
